In case you’ve missed the news, Newell Barney Junior High is transforming into a college prep junior high school starting in the 2024–2025 school year serving 7th and 8th grade students! Newell Barney College Prep’s (NBCP) mission is to help students realize their fullest potential. This is accomplished through an accelerated curriculum, Leader In Me Program, and electives focused on career readiness and STEM.

What sets NBCP apart? Its commitment to excellence in every aspect of learning:

Accelerated Curriculum: With a focus on academics, the accelerated program ensures that students are challenged by going beyond traditional grade standards. Students will be prepared for the honors, dual enrollment, and advanced placement classes they will take in high school. Learning will be personalized for each student to meet their needs and set them up for success.

Having an accelerated curriculum also means that students can earn up to four high school credits while in junior high! This allows students to take additional electives such as fine arts classes, CTE electives, or seminary.

STEM-Focused Programming: STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) means students can learn through hands-on experiences and engage in a collaborative environment. Problem-solving skills are taught in a way that ignites curiosity and has real-world applications.

Leadership Development: NBCP implements a Leader in Me Program that aims to teach students the skills they need to improve relationships, leadership roles, and keep motivations high. Leader in Me is an evidence-based program developed by educators based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, authored by Stephen R. Covey. The goal of this program is to help shape well-rounded students who are capable of “responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork, collaboration, and renewal.”

In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in Project Lead the Way. NBCP will offer skill-focused STEM electives in areas of student interest.

NBCP’s commitment to achieving excellence is found in a supportive community and learning environment. Class sizes are small, giving students more one-on-one time with instructors. Transportation will be provided for students not within NBCP’s boundaries but within the district’s boundaries.
